inside the white house they didn't believe it was a status quo election. they believe the president won decisively and did get the mandate. house republicans believe they had a mandate to cut spending and the president believed he had a mandate to raise taxes. they will have the same clash two months from now. not just over the sequester which will be back in two months but in two months another clash over the debt ceiling. i'm not sure anybody wins tonight when they are kicking the can down the road again. nation will still be watching this closely. the markets will be watching it closely but the white house will believe in the days ahead that they won because in this fight the president in the end is getting the tax cuts for the middle class he wanted. he is getting the tax increases on the rich that he wanted. and there are no major spending cuts. no major entitlement reform that the republicans, the house republicans wanted. as mike suggested they believe the republicans do that they will get those in the debt ceiling fight. we'll see. the bottom line

they voted in the presidential election and re-elected a president who said that was his criteria. but the president understands this is a process where compromise is necessary. the house of representatives, controlled by the republicans, clearly has indicated that a million dollars was not acceptable to it in the united states senate. clearly, mitch mcconnell controls the ability under the senate rules of the legislation to move forward. so the president simply is saying, look. i don't want taxes to go up on working americans. i want to make sure that the unemployed have some help going forward and we need to move on those two issues. he is prepared to compromise and has been willing to compromise and, in fact, has compromised throughout the last two years. do some democrats not like that? yes, i think that is the case. i frank liam not enthusiastic about the compromise being talked about today. >> would you vote yes on it? >> we'll have to see what the final product is. but i think we need to get to compromise. we need to move forward. nobody wants to go over this cliff. going ov

none of us were elected on a promise to vote "maybe." if the other side wants to vote and give huge tax cuts to mult imillionaires, well, fine, then vote -- vote "yes" for that, if they want. but don't say we won't have any vote one way or the other; we'll vote "maybe." we're supposed to be willing to take the consequences of how we vote. vote "yes" or vote "no." if you want to vote for keeping taxes lower for the middle class, for those who have hourly wages, for those who work hard in our economy, then stand up and vote yes, we want to give them a tax break. if you don't want to give them a tax break, then vote "no." but what is happening, by refusing to vote at all, whether it is in the shal -- the republs in the house of representatives or here in the senate, by refusing to vote at all, what you're doing with your "maybe" vote, you're going to dramatically increase taxes on the middle class. now, -- and then to try to justify that by saying, we wanted to vote "maybe" because we really wanted, in the end run, to protect millionaires.
